Among ancient Chinese books and records, there are a variety of works
entitled “histories,” but there is no history of aesthetics due to the funda-
mental reason that the term “aesthetics” didn’t exist in ancient China. To
have a better understanding of this phenomenon, a concept of comparative
culture must be mentioned here. All well-developed cultures are rich in aes-
thetics, but only some of them have been studied from the perspective of
aesthetic theory. Among the cultures that have undergone theoretical re-
search, only Western culture has developed aesthetics as an academic disci-
pline. Some major aesthetic topics studied in Western culture have also been
discussed in Chinese culture, however, they have not been explored in the
same theoretical way. Modern Chinese culture requires us to distill a history
of Chinese aesthetics from other materials, as there was no theoretical study
on ancient Chinese aesthetics. The modern transformation of Chinese aca-
demics aims to reestablish Chinese culture in accordance with the world
academic system. Since aesthetics is listed in the world academic system,
Chinese academics must follow suit. Similarly, due to the existence of
Western aesthetic history, Chinese aesthetic history is expected as well. In
other words, a summary of Chinese aesthetic history is required through
the modernization of Chinese academic system. Modern society, starting
from Western countries and expanding to a global scale, has changed dis-
persive world history into a unified one with Western culture as its main
stream. Scholars in non-Western cultures such as in India, China, Islamic
communities and even in Africa, have taken Western aesthetics as a refer-
ence in reestablishing their own aesthetic histories and published numerous
works on the history of aesthetics from their respective cultures.
