ZHANG Dongsun (1886-1973) was one of the most influential philosophers in China from the 1920s to the 1940s. His philosophy is an excellent attempt to synthesize Chinese and Western philosophy in some important aspects. His epistemology, the central part of his philosophy, starts out as a kind of epistemological pluralism and culminates in a cultural epistemology. To investigate further how culture and society influence and shape our knowledge, Zhang undertook comparative studies of Chinese and Western philosophy. Although his comparative studies were done more than a half century ago, his insights retain great value today.

This volume consists of both a study and translation of Zhang’s works. The translation included in the volume makes some of Zhang’s works available in English for the first time. The article in the volume is the most comprehensive discussion of Zhang Dongsun’s philosophy in English up to today. Readers of the volume will find it valuable not only for study of Zhang’s thought in particular but also for understanding of contemporary Chinese philosophy in general.
